I have always held a sense of lightheartedness when it comes to my recovery. I have to, it would be too bleak not to; imagine having an illness that makes you afraid of your own mind, how would you deal with that if not with humor? Laughter brings a lot of light into the dark, and if you’re reading this then I think you’d agree too. a lot of people think humor is not an important part of recovery or that you can’t make jokes with your therapist, but from personal experience, I know they are just wrong.
Why not? I mean if you want to go through your life without cracking a joke or two, that’s up to you, your recovery is yours. I need to make jokes to let a little the light in and to bring a conversation onto my greatest fears.
How do I get started?
Not everyone can tell a good joke, it’s a skill. So here’s an exercise for you: find a comic you like (there are tons out there on YouTube, Netflix, Amazon, and more) one whose story speaks to you, and then figure out why they are so funny to you. Are they doing physical comedy? Are they insightful? Do they have a tragic backstory? What about them is relatable? Write that down, often times humor comes from our shared experiences.
